Alstom, a rail manufacturer, has achieved its largest deal in Germany with a €4 billion order from go.Rheinland and Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) public transport authority for 90 new commuter trains in Cologne. This landmark order includes the supply of Adessia Stream trains for the S-Bahn network in the city and a full-service maintenance agreement for 34 years, covering the entire lifecycle of the fleet. The President of Alstom’s DACH region, Müslüm Yakisan, emphasized the impact these new trains will have on public transport in the region.

The 90 trains will come in two versions – a 9-car and an 11-car train – for use in different areas of the S-Bahn network. Alstom will commence the development of the fleet at its site in Henningsdorf, Germany, followed by production at a factory in Bautzen and maintenance at depots around the Cologne area. These trains are expected to offer a high level of passenger experience, comfort, and accessibility for commuters.

The new trains will have a capacity of either 1,150 or 1,340 passengers, capable of speeds up to 140km/h, and will feature modern amenities such as air conditioning and improved mobile reception through specially treated windows. They will also include toilets, making them the first on the network to do so, and gap-bridging devices at two entrances to ensure level access for wheelchair and mobility aid users. This contract adds to Alstom’s portfolio of high-value deals, including ones in Hamburg and Australia.

In conclusion, the €4 billion deal between Alstom and go.Rheinland/VRR in Germany for 90 new commuter trains in Cologne marks a significant development in public transport. With a focus on passenger comfort and accessibility, these trains will enhance the S-Bahn network in Cologne, introducing modern features and advanced technology to improve the overall commuting experience for passengers in the region.
