Staten Island’s “Cologne Kid”, Dean Scarangello, is gaining attention for both his impressive play in the Little League World Series and his passion for cologne. At just 12 years old, Scarangello’s undeniable talent on the baseball field has contributed significantly to his team’s success, while his collection of over 40 scents has caught the eye of ESPN and the Staten Island Advance. Despite the unexpected fame as the “Cologne Boy,” Scarangello is pleased that people recognize him for his unique hobby.
During a crucial game on Sunday, Scarangello’s exceptional performance, highlighted by a two-run single, helped prevent his South Shore team from being eliminated. Proudly watching from the stands was his father John Scarangello, a retired FDNY lieutenant who himself played baseball at a high school and Division 1 level. Although he never pushed his sons Luca and Dean into playing baseball, he is thrilled that they share his passion for the sport.
In addition to baseball, both Scarangello boys share a fascination with cologne, a hobby they did not inherit from their father. John Scarangello recalls a humorous incident when he mistakenly applied one of Dean’s scents, only to be corrected by his son on the appropriate seasonal fragrance. Although amused by his son’s newfound fame as a cologne enthusiast, John Scarangello is proud to see him excelling in both baseball and personal interests.
Reflecting on his experiences at the Little League World Series, Dean expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet players from around the world and engage in multicultural interactions. Despite his growing recognition for his dual interests in baseball and cologne, Dean remains focused on his performance on the field and looks forward to returning to a relaxed atmosphere in Staten Island after the tournament.
